Read-a-thon has been an annual tradition at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School for the past 15 years. For two weeks in the winter, FPG students focus on reading. Every student from Kindergarten through fifth grade has a goal of reading 75 or 100 minutes per day. Each year Read-a-thon has a a different theme. For 2014, the theme is “EXTRA! EXTRA! Todo el mundo lee! All the World Reads!

Read-a-thon is a win-win for FPG students. The program motivates students to read more and achieve their reading goals, while raising crucial funds to support the school. Students are asked to request donations from family and friends for the reading they do. Last year’s Read-a-thon raised nearly $13,000 that the PTA used to support the school’s media center, science lab, enrichment programs, field trips, teacher supplies and other items.
